But aside from that, there are still some characteristics that affect the quality and appearance of the diamond. In order for you to make the perfect purchase, here are some few important advanced features of the diamonds that can help you pick the right one. These include a diamond’s proportion, polish, symmetry, and fluorescence.

 

Diamond’s Proportion

  • This is basically the sizes of the diamond’s parts like its depth, width, table and facets
  • Diamond proportions use digital scanners for measurements.
  • In measuring the table’s size and dimensions of a diamond, GIA also uses scanners for it.
  • Too shallow or too deep cuts will cause the diamonds to lose its overall brilliance.
  • Ideal cut proportions
    • Table diameter: 53%-57.5%
    • Crown height:4%-16.2%
    • Pavilion depth:1%-43.2%

 

Diamond’s Polish

  • Refers to the sleek appearance of the diamond’s surface
  • Also refers to the brilliance the diamond is reflection to the viewer’s eye
  • Graded on a scale of Excellent to Poor basing on the appearance of polish features at 10x magnification.
  • For utmost luminosity, every facet should be polished after each cutting process.
  • This is a critical component for the cut quality.

Diamond’s Symmetry

  • The preciseness and the balance of the cut design, especially the facets, mirrors, windows, and steps
  • Graded on a scale of Excellent to Poor basing on the appearance of polish features at 10x magnification.
  • Highlights the well-balanced and properly aligned facets. Causes the diamond to reflect less brilliance if facets are not symmetrical.
  • Is less crucial to the overall beauty of diamonds.

Diamond’s Fluorescence

  • Exhibits a diamond’s tendency to expose ultraviolet light.
  • It is the glow that appears when an object releases a visible light.
  • Only about 25% to 35% of diamonds exhibit some degree of fluorescence.
  • The naked eye can’t detect low levels of fluorescence.
  • Strong florescence enhances the appearance of the diamonds which have color rate of H or lower.
